Liposuction
Albany Liposuction, Capital District NY
INDICATIONS FOR LIPOSUCTION
Patients who are close to their normal body weight and desire improved body shape are optimal candidates for liposuction. Areas that can be treated include hips, thighs, buttocks, knees, calves, ankles, trunk including flanks and love handles, upper arms, face and neck.
LIPOSUCTION SURGERY
The operative correction involves suction removal of the selected areas of fat. We utilize a tumescent technique injecting the area to be treated with saline and local anesthetic to minimize bruising. Power assisted liposuction (PAL) and/ or ultrasonic assisted liposuction (UAL) are utilized to remove the unwanted fat.

LOCATION FOR LIPOSUCTION SURGERY
Liposuction can be performed in our office operating room or as an Outpatient at Ellis Hospital. Either sedation or general anesthesia is used. Small areas can be treated in the office with local anesthesia and sedation. Large volume removal requires a one day hospital stay.
TRADE OFFS OF LIPOSUCTION
There is mild surgical discomfort, bruising, swelling, and numbness for about 3-4 weeks after surgery. Permanent scars are present but are generally very small.
RISKS OF LIPOSUCTION
Although uncommon, complications can occur and include bleeding, infection, fluid collections, delayed healing with skin loss, asymmetry, rippling, widened scars and the occasional need for additional surgery. In very large volume liposuction the risk of excess fluid loss with shock is possible.
RECOVERY FROM LIPOSUCTION
Our patients wear a compression dressing for 3-4 weeks to encourage good wound healing and minimize complications. Most patients return to work 1-3 weeks following surgery, light physical activity at 2- 4 weeks and their normal exercise routine at 4-6 weeks. Scar maturation occurs in 18-24 months.
