Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)
INDICATIONS
The development of female-like breasts in males may occur during adolescence, with obesity, and in certain illnesses or genetic conditions.
SURGERY
The operative correction involves surgical excision of the glandular breast tissue and/or liposuction in selected patients. Time 2-3hrs.
LOCATION
Outpatient general anesthesia at the hospital.
TRADE OFFS
There is mild surgical discomfort, bruising, swelling, numbness and altered nipple sensitivity for about 2-3 weeks after surgery. Permanent scars are present and vary according to the technique used for surgery.
RISKS
Although uncommon, complications can occur and include bleeding, infection, fluid collections, delayed healing with skin or nipple loss, asymmetry, widened and prominent scars and the occasional need for additional surgery particularly if excess skin persists.
RECOVERY
Our patients wear a compression dressing for 2-3 weeks to encourage good wound healing and minimize complications. Most patients return to work 1-3 weeks following surgery, light physical activity at 2- 4 weeks and their normal exercise routine at 4-6 weeks. Scar maturation occurs in 18-24 months.
